Italy: 1-Week Roadtrip Guide

It's impossible to see all of Italy in 1-week, however this guide is perfect if you only have 1 week and want to see the West Coast, starting at Cinque Terre and driving to Rome through Tuscany. Other trips will be necessary if you want to eat even more pasta and pizza in Italy's other regions.

Although Italy's railway infrastructure is well connected, and parts of this itinerary could be completed via train, we recommend hiring a car to make it easier and more enjoyable.

Day 1-2: Cinque Terre

Start the week by making your way to Cinque Terre, which is made up of 5 famous hillside towns:

  1. Monterosso

  2. Vernazza

  3. Corniglia

  4. Manarola

  5. Riomaggiore

Although we recommend hiring a car for this trip, travelling between the towns in Cinque Terre is best done by train. You can park your car for the day and return to it later.

Visit as many of the towns as you want, all have something different to offer and are worth the effort.

Day 3: Florence en-route to Tuscany

Start the day by driving 2.5-hours to Florence, the perfect city to break-up the driving, have some amazing food and do some shopping. Also stop by Duomo of Florence and the famous bridge - Ponte Vecchio.

Day 4: Tuscan Countryside

Welcome to countryside perfection. Tuscany boasts some of the worlds most picturesque landscapes, including:

  1. Winding driveway to Agriturismo Baccoleno

  2. Podere Belvedere

These are our top location picks - if you only leave yourself enough time to see a few sights here - these should be the ones. However much of what you see of 'Tuscany' online, is experienced by driving through the endless rolling hills.

Day 5: Saturnia Hot Springs

Arrive at Saturnia free public Hot Springs the night before if you want to experience it to yourself in the best possible light. We suggest getting there for sunrise for maximum enjoyment, by 9am it will be start to get very crowded.

These hot springs are around 37C and apparently good for releasing aches and pains. The minerals here are sulphur, calcium and carbon, good for skin conditions and aching joints.

Watch out for small worms that live in the water, these creeped Evey out, but we are led to believe they are harmless.

Day 6-7: Rome before home

Drive 2.5 to 3-hours from Saturnia and you'll arrive in Rome - the perfect place to end your road trip and take it easy for a few days before jetting off.

In Rome, make sure to visit:

  1. Colosseum

  2. Trevi Fountain

  3. Vatican City

Best Time to Visit Italy / Tuscany

Best to avoid the summer months, when crowds peak and it can be less enjoyable. April, May, June, September and October are the preferred months to visit. Having said that; we went in May and it rained pretty heavily - but we always get unlucky with the weather! If visiting in April or October, pack a jacket for the evenings for sure.
