We’ve been to French Ski Resort of Flaine twice in the last year, and here’s why:
1. Great snow conditions
Flaine is one of the most snow sure resorts, helped hugely by its geographical location with a bowl-like valley. It’s base is at 1,600m and peaks at 2,561m. There are of plenty of options for both skiers and snowboarders, with beginner to black slopes. You can either get a Flaine ski pass for the immediate area, or explore the whole of Grand Massif - all accessible by gondolas and chair lifts. 2. Terminal Neige Totem
One of our favourite hotels, and in our opinion the most convenient hotel in Flaine! Open fire places, chic furniture and views directly overlooking the mountains make this place very special. It’s ski in ski out, and you can rent all your equipment from them direct. Their ski shop is top of the line and if you ski as well as snowboard, you can switch between the two as you wish. Admittedly we didn’t eat at every restaurant in town, but from what we did experience – the food at the hotel was the best. Note that it is a buffet though. The cherry on the top at this hotel is their outdoor hot tub, check it out below!
3. Close to airport
The sluggish trek up alps in the dark, in an old coach full of screaming kids is not something you have to endure if you’re going to Flaine. It’s a relatively short 90minute drive from Geneva airport which was especially good for us, because as usual, it was only a short trip with 3 full days on the slopes. We've used Snow Vans (www.snow-vans.com/) for both our trips, they were the cheapest option we found and have the most friendly drivers.
4. Peaceful atmosphere
Flaine doesn’t have a big apres ski scene, in fact it probably has t
he least lively night scene out of all the ski resorts we’ve been to. If you go knowing that, then you’ll not be disappointed. In the evenings most residents retreat to their hotels/apartments making the town quiet which we enjoyed because it meant we could actually get up early the next day and be one of the first of the ski lifts.
All of the above are the reasons why this resort suited us this year. So if you’re short on time and want somewhere with a very good chance of decent snow, with a great accommodation option - we’d highly recommend Flaine.
